Positions

We are always seeking highly qualified and motivated graduate students, postdocs, fellows, RAs, and CRCs, to join our research team.

Postdoc applicants: please send a PDF of your CV and publication list, a brief (half page) statement of research and long-term career directions, and contact information for 3 references to Dr. Edward Hsiao (edward.hsiao at ucsf.edu). Applications will be considered on a rolling basis depending on lab space, funding availibiity, and applicant qualifications.

Current Postdoc Opportunities (as of October 2022)

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN MUSCULOSKELETAL DISEASE

The Hsiao lab at the University of California in San Francisco, CA USA, has two Postdoctoral Fellow positions available for scientists interested in musculoskeletal basic/translational human research.

Our lab uses the skeletal system as a basis for understanding how hormonal and genetic factors affect human development and disease. We use a wide spectrum of approaches to develop a broader understanding of the biology underlying skeletal development, develop new models for studying disease pathology and how other organs interact with the skeleton, and devise novel therapeutic approaches.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to lead integrated research projects in these areas as part of a basic/translational research team:

Postdoctoral fellowship in human iPS cell modeling of inflammation and bone disease: This project involves the use of human iPS cells to model inflammatory and neurologic contributors to abnormal bone formation, and the identification of potential molecular targets for blocking excessive bone formation. We are also using human iPS cells to understand how different signaling pathways, such as BMPs and GPCRs, regulate osteogenesis and using iPS cells to create microphysiologic models of disease. Candidates should have extensive, demonstrable experience in cellular and molecular biology methods including stem cell culture. Computational experience with single cell or RNAseq analysis is also preferred (including experience with R and python). Experience with mouse imaging (microCT), histologic analyses, and surgeries is also highly preferred.

Postdoctoral fellowship in human microbiome as a modifier of heterotopic ossification: This project uses human specimens and mouse models to understand how the gut microbiome impacts heterotopic ossification, a situation where bone forms at an inappropriate site and often in response to inflammation. Projects will involve the derivation and study of human iPS cell-derived lineages such as macrophages, and understanding how these critical lineages contribute to human bone formation after injury (such as heterotopic ossification) and are modulated by the microbiome. Candidates should have extensive, demonstrable experience in cellular and molecular biology methods and mouse work. Computational experience with microbiome metabologenomic and metabolomic analyses is highly preferred (including experience with R and python). Experience with mouse imaging (microCT) and histology is also highly preferred.

All positions require excellent written and verbal communication skills. Within our diverse community, strong teaching and mentoring experience is expected for leadership of the research teams. The candidate must be highly motivated, responsible, creative, personable, and work well in a highly collaborative environment.
